Your tires are the only part of your car that touches the road every day. Everything else, your brakes, your steering, your suspension, works through them. When they wear out, it’s both inconvenient and unsafe.
So how long will your tires last and when are they due for a closer look? At My Calgary Mechanic, we’re transparent and here to give you those answers and many more.

ToggleHow Long Do Tires Last in Calgary?
In short, most tires last between 50,000 and 80,000 kilometres, but this depends on your tire type, your driving habits and how well they’re maintained. The best way to get a general range is consulting the manufacturers.
Unfortunately, in Calgary, this number can shift. In some cases, it isn’t always in your favour.
Why is Calgary Harder on Tires Than Most Cities?
Calgary’s climate doesn’t go easy on your tires year-round. Freezing winters, chinook temperature swings, spring potholes and hot dry summers all impact the rubber in different ways.
Here are some things Calgary drivers have to deal with:
- Temperature Cycling: Constant freezing and thawing can cause rubber to expand and contract, accelerating cracking and sidewall stress.
- Road Salt and Sand: Used to prevent skidding in the winter months, these can accelerate surface wear and affect tire pressure consistency.
- Pothole Season: Spring roads in Calgary show no mercy. Impact damage to sidewalls and rims happens, but isn’t always visible right away.
- Seasonal Tire Swapping: Running two sets of tires (winter and all-season or summer) helps both sets last longer, but only if properly maintained and stored.
Living in Calgary, you’re probably aware of all of these. However, by being mindful through the changing season, you can get more life out of your tires.
What Are Signs Your Tires Are Done Regardless of Age?
Think of kilometre limits as guidelines, not guarantees. Regardless of how new your tires are, look for:
- Tread Depth Below 2/32” (1.6 mm): This is the legal minimum in Alberta. Here’s an easy check: place a quarter into the tread groove with the caribou’s nose pointing down. If you can see the top of the nose, it’s time for new tires.
- Cracking or Dry Rot: Visible cracks along the sidewall or between tread blocks mean the rubber is beginning to break down. This is often a result of age, UV exposure or improper storage, it can happen even on tires with decent tread left.
- Vibration or Pulling: If your car is pulling to one side or vibrates at highway speed, it might be a sign of uneven wear, a balance issue or internal tire damage.
- Bulges or Bubbles: A bulge in the sidewall happens when the internal structure is compromised. Swap out this tire immediately.
- Age Over Six Years: Some tires look okay on the outside, but will degrade internally over time. Most manufacturers recommend inspection after six years and replacement by ten, regardless of tread.
We recommend getting your tires inspected regularly in Calgary. Feel free to stop by or book an appointment at our shop so we can help you out.
How Do You Get More Life Out of Your Tires?
In most cases, premature tire wear is easily preventable. Here are some tips:
- Rotate Every 8,000-12,000 Km: This ensures even wear across all four tires.
- Check Tire Pressure Monthly: Calgary experiences regular temperature swings so pressure fluctuates more than it would in stable climates.
- Get Annual Wheel Alignment: Also, look into this after any significant pothole impact.
- Store Seasonal Tires Properly: They should be somewhere cool, dry and away from ozone sources (i.e. electric motors).
Your tires don’t have to wear out right away. If you care for your tires with proper tips, you can keep them on the road for longer.
